How can I save data on my phone?

7 effective tips to reduce mobile data usage.
Ah, precious mobile data. It’s one of the things we mobile users value most of all. We all know the dreadful feeling of realising halfway through a Youtube video that you’re disconnected from wifi and have been using your mobile data instead. Whether we’re scrolling social media on the train to work, using navigation on your phone to find a tucked away bar or sending our friends a photo of the pair of shoes we’ve been eying off for weeks, it’s all possible because our mobile phone data allows us to get online. If you’re thinking to yourself, how can I save data on my phone? You’re not alone. So with this in mind we took a look at ways we can all save phone data and get more out of our mobile plans.
1. Check your data usage plus gift and receive data
If you’re with Everyday Mobile from Woolworths, you’ll be able to check out your monthly data usage in the Everyday Mobile app or in My Account to keep you on track. You can also gift and receive data across our range of plans and save any unused data in your Data Bank. Very handy for those more remote camping trips!
2. Close apps when you’re not using them to save data.
This one seems pretty obvious but it’s easy to forget to fully close an app after you minimise it. So unbeknownst to you, your app is still there doing things in the background like refreshing the apps feed and updating your location. All these little things can quickly add up and use up your mobile data.
It’s also important to be aware of what apps are using the most data. Your phone will most likely break down data usage for you. Take a look at where your data is going. You might be surprised.
3. Turn off location push notifications for apps that don’t need it.
Most apps these days want to keep our attention and are constantly letting us know what’s going on with their app. What can start off as helpful can easily turn into a nuisance and also chew through your data. You can turn off push notifications for any apps you don’t need from your phone settings.
4. Save mobile data by connecting to Wi-Fi where possible.
Wonderful Wi-Fi. One of the best inventions to come out of Australia and it’s becoming available for free in more and more public places so why not take advantage of it? When you’re connected to Wi-Fi you can turn off your mobile data and still stay online. A win/win for your data and your hip pocket. So save downloading, surfing and streaming for when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
However, while public Wi-Fi is convenient, it's important to exercise caution as these networks are often unsecured, leaving your personal information vulnerable to hackers. To protect yourself, avoid accessing sensitive data like bank accounts or email while on public Wi-Fi, and consider using a VPN for an added layer of security.
While we’re talking about Wi-Fi, set your App Auto update to only when Wi-Fi is on.
5. Sync playlists and listen to music offline.
Boogie wonderland! Whether it’s Earth, Wind and Fire that gets you bopping along or some other equally catchy band, music can put you in a great frame of mind and make your day that much brighter. So, that said, it’s important to keep your favourite playlist available. Download or sync your favourite tunes to your phone while you have access to Wi-fi so you don’t need to stream using your data every time you want to hear your favourite beat.
6. Turn your data off altogether.
Go off grid. Well, turning your phone off doesn’t really count as going off grid, but it does give you a chance to disconnect from the online world and reconnect with those around you or even just take some time to yourself to de-stress and forget about the worries of the world for a few hours.
How to change your settings to save data.
iPhone: Go to Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data.
Android: Go to Settings > Tap Network & internet. Internet > Next to your carrier, tap Settings > Turn Mobile data on or off.
7. Download streaming content on Wi–FI to watch offline.
We all want to keep on top of our favourite shows. Why not download the content you can’t miss whilst on Wi-Fi. You’ll then be able to watch it later when you’re out and about without streaming and using up your precious data.
8. Turn of Auto-Play to save mobile data.
Some apps are designed so that they preload and auto-play videos in the app as you scroll through your feed. Simply turning off this feature in your favourite social media app’s settings could help cut back on your monthly data usage.
How much data does the average person use?
According to ACCC’s Internet Activity report from June 2024, The average Australian uses 9.3GB a month on a prepaid mobile plan and 17.4GB on a postpaid plan.
