Telstra Scam Indicator
From 22 November 2024, we will be introducing Telstra Scam Indicator, as part of the Everyday Mobile Service to help protect our customers from phone and banking scams. Telstra Scam Indicator was jointly developed by Telstra and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia to help detect and prevent phone scams for joint customers.
What is Telstra Scam Indicator & How Does it Work?
Telstra Scam Indicator is an anti-scam technology that provides an additional layer of protection against phone scams for customers of participating organisations (such as banks). The technology enables the participating bank to understand whether its customer may be on a call to a scammer.
It uses a Telstra Application Programming Interface (API) that trusted partners can integrate into their scam detection processes to identify high-risk scam situations in real time. The participating bank’s fraud team can then decide if they want to take any action – for example, blocking the transaction, and can proactively send real-time alerts to the impacted customer, for example via a message through the banking app, to help stop the scam in real-time.
To protect customer privacy, partners are only able to access specific data points relating to scam prevention through the API and do not have access to the contents of any communication or other underlying customer data.
Currently mutual customers of Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Everyday Mobile are protected by Scam Indicator. In future the technology may be rolled out to other banks.
Launched in 2023, Telstra Scam Indicator has successfully prevented vulnerable Australians from losing millions to scam and fraud.
What does this mean for me?
Telstra Scam Indicator will be a standard feature of all new and existing Everyday Mobile services from 22 November 2024.
How can I opt out of Telstra Scam Indicator?
If you would like to opt-out your Everyday Mobile number from Telstra Scam Indicator, you can follow these steps:
- Send an SMS to 0407 102 173 with the text OPT-OUT;
- You will receive a one-time passcode from Telstra to confirm the request is genuine;
- You will need to copy that one-time passcode to a new SMS to be sent to 0407 102 173; and
- You will then be sent an SMS confirming that they have opted-out of Telstra Scam Indicator
If you are a customer of a participating bank, that bank may still send your phone number to Telstra to request a response from Telstra Scam Indicator, however, opting out of Telstra Scam Indicator means that Telstra will not share any insights back to the bank in relation to your Everyday Mobile number.
Opting out won’t affect your services with Everyday Mobile - you’ll still enjoy all the usual benefits! And if you ever change your mind, you can always easily opt-in again by contacting us
